US Appeals For Credible Poll in Cameroon

With presidential elections in five months, the United States calls on the Cameroonian authorities to give the area of ​​the national electoral commission to exercise its mandate.

A statement from the U.S. State Department and signed by the Secretary of State for Clinton, Hillary, accused the authorities of Cameroon to create the conditions for the electoral commission to continue to depend on the presidency.

The statement urged the Cameroonian authorities to seriously consider strengthening democracy, good governance and the rule of law, if the regime was to be considered credible by the international community.

Mrs Clinton’s statement comes at a time when the civil society organisations in the country are accusing the government of President Paul Biya of pursing an “institutional hold-up”.

Both the civil society organisations and the opposition political parties are agitating to have an equal representation on the electoral commission

Furthermore, they have appealed to the international community to help diffuse what they referred to as “a concocted plan by government to rig the upcoming elections”.

Over the past 20 years, the electoral process in Cameroon has always faced criticism from both the local and international community.

Cameroon has also, for a long time, been considered among the most corrupt countries by Transparency International.

This year, several journalists and political opponents were arrested and imprisoned by the government, which accused them of inciting trouble.
