The competition falls within celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Cameroon’s independence.
Within the frame work of activities marking the 50th anniversary of Cameroon’s independence, the Cameroon golf federation in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education and the National Olympic Committee, will from May 8 to 15 be organising the first ever international golf tournament in Cameroon. The tournament dubbed “Open international du Cinquantenaire de l’Independence” will take place at the Yaounde golf club in the Mont Febe neighbourhood and will see the participation of close to 60 professionals from Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, Morocco, Kenya, South Africa and host Cameroon.
In prelude to the event, officials of the Cameroon golf federation organised a press conference on Wednesday at the premises of the golf club in Yaounde in the presence of the Minister of Sports and Physical education, Michel Zoah and the president of the national Olympic Committee, Col. Kalkaba Malboum. The president of Fecagolf, Ahanda Assiga Yves Martin, said preparations were in a high gear to make sure the event goes on hitch-free. Renovation work is going on around the golf course and the federation has acquired new equipment.
Minister Michel Zoah said the golf federation had two major challenges; that of organisation and sport competition in order to boost Cameroon’s image abroad. He urged federation officials to democratise the sport in Cameroon so as to depict talents that can valuably defend Cameroon in the Olympic Games. As part of measures to democratise the practise of golf in Cameroon, the federation disclosed that they have plans to open up golf schools and create more infrastructure.
The competition will take place in both the professional and amateur categories and visitors will be allowed to try their hand in the game of golf all through the duration of the tournament. Trophies will be awarded to winners in a gala night at the Hilton hotel in Yaounde at the end of the competition.
