Pop Culture Reflection-II

The study of American culture throughout the industry of the movies is interesting. Movies, Oscars, the relationship between the Oscars and the film industry, The Afro-American director Tyler Perry, the creation of virtual humans and the study of horror movies are topics that left me deep knowledge during this quarter. I learned through three main activities; reading, seeking and doing activities. First, from films I learned that movies reflect our lives and entertain us, make us laugh, scream and even cry. The movies are created by big companies like Hollywood, Paramount, Fox and Warnerbross. Also, Independent movies have created important movies (Indi movies). An example of an independent movie is the movie made by Tyler Perry and Ohpra “Precious” Aha. I didn’t know that they where more than three or four different genre of movies. There are eleven main ones but they are more sub-genre. Second, I would like to talk about the Oscars. Oscars are the main award that all actors and producers want. The Oscars are awards given by the Hollywood Academy (600 critics) and they are not representing the big companies of movies and the academy is not giving the awards to the movies that made more money or were more popular in Hollywood. They sometimes award the prize to Indi movies as well. Something that was funny to me was the moment when my teacher, representing the Academy, gave the Oscar to my classmate Aila. (It was a wonderful time I spent watching the academy awards of Hollywood and the interview me and Momoko made two times at school). I liked the genre presentation through the trailers that we presented. I would like to mention the western genre that my classmates presented with the famous music used to present the trailer. Third, Tyler Perry is a good director and he is also a successful money maker. He is an independent movie maker. I want to site famous directors like Francis Ford Coppola that directed “The Godfather” and James Cameroon who directed “Titanic”. I learned this information through the research and genre presentation the teacher assigned us. Through the creation of virtual humans I learned how to create a computer character from the beginning, the difficulty and the advantages and disadvantages of using it. Finally, I want to mention the horror movies, which I don’t like but are still interesting. The first movie “Nesferatu” with no sound, but a very good movie, reminds me of my childhood in my town when everything scared me. Finally, I want to mention that through this unit Popular Culture taught me (bumper sticker) that through the movies we can learn how our culture is. Through making a preview I could imagine at least part of the job involved in making a movie. The study of film industry also teaches me how the economy of a country is going. I also learned who are the actors and directors, of the moment. To finish my reflection I would like to mention three phrases that I liked from this unit, Indie movies (independent movie), Aroma of snake oil (something fake), and shooting fish in a barrel
