HOPE that the Cameroon soccer team may still use Buffalo City as its base camp for the 2010 World Cup revived last night when it was learnt that an announcement will now only be made later this week.
Earlier, Buffalo City Municipality executive director Vuyo Zambotla, who heads the city’s 2010 campaign, expressed some disappointment that he had received no communication from Cameroon about their choice of venue. “Things don’t look too bright but at this stage. I cannot definitely say that they (the Cameroon team) will not come here,” said Zambotla. “But I also cannot say they will come.”
Later World Cup Organising Committee media manager Rich Mkhondo told the Daily Dispatch that an announcement about where the 32 teams will reside would probably only be made tomorrow or on Thursday.
Zambotla said he had received no correspondence from Cameroon. “But we will continue with what we are doing – until we know for sure.”
Peter Gregerson, general manager of the Blue Lagoon Hotel, which has been linked with the Cameroon team, also said he had not yet heard from either Fifa or the Cameroon team management.
Gregerson, whose hotel had to give Fifa an undertaking 18 months ago that – while it was waiting to hear whether Cameroon would come to the hotel – it would not rent out rooms during the duration of the World Cup, said he would have to know by February 15 whether the team was coming.
Zambotla said Fifa could not force any World Cup team to take accommodation it did not want. The Dispatch earlier reported that an official Fifa document revealed that Cameroon had opted for the Oyster Box Hotel in Umhlanga Rocks as its preferred accommodation.
“They (Cameroon) have not come back to us to say that they would be going to the Oyster Box Hotel,” said Zambotla.
Zambotla said further delays may later be problematic because BCM was in discussions with Border Rugby over the use of the Absa Stadium.
“Border Rugby wants to host the visiting team from Italy, playing against the Springboks. Now we have to tell them (Border Rugby) to be cautious about announcing that.”
