Cameroon: Poor Reporters, Rich Publishers

We don't know and you may never get cogent reasons if the private newspaper business is profitable or not. But from the look of things, the outfits and standard of living of some of the reporters leaves a bitter taste in our mouths. Are their salaries regular, if at all the reporters do have something in the name of salaries. If so, are they paid catechist salaries or something worth three square meals a day? And how much is it? Before we ask more questions, let's doff our hats to these "brave" gentlemen and women of the Fourth Estate who toil and withstand all odds to produce highly readable newspapers on a daily and weekly basis. What of the publishers? The cry of no adverts, no subvention has virtually become the singsong when reporters ask for their dues or for better working conditions. Yet, the reporters are those who hunt for the adverts and at times even do the distribution. Ah...then what of the lifestyle of the publishers? Their cars, their buildings, their outfits and numerous concubines are enough evidence of affluence. What next? Well, helpless poor reporters can only complain and gnash their teeth; waiting for greener pastures that may never come. What a life!
